Year 6 report about our visit to the Living Rainforest

On Monday 2nd March, Year 4, 5 and 6 went on a visit to the Living Rainforest in Newbury. Our tour guide was called Lucy. She taught us about how climate change is affecting our world, especially the rainforests of our planet. The Ozone Layer is disappearing which is making our planet warmer. Humans are also cutting down the rainforests (deforestation). This is not a good thing as lots of habitats are being lost forever. Plants, which absorb carbon dioxide from our atmosphere, are being destroyed.

Inside the living rainforest it felt very hot, wet and humid. They needed to make the habitat like this so that the plants and animals that live there could thrive. Our favourite animals were the marmoset monkey (Penelope) and Cinnamon the sloth, whose birthday is on the 16th March.

Lucy told us we could all make a difference. We were shown the symbols for fair trade and the Rainforest Allegiance Certified badge. If you buy food items that have these symbols, the production of these items will not be harming the planet. Everybody can make a small change which will have a positive effect on our planet.

World Book Day Exhibition and PTA sale of pre-loved books - Thursday 5th March

The pre-loved book sale will be held in the front garden from 3.15pm for for children and families in all classes. The children have been organising an exhibition of their wonderfully imaginative ‘Book Puppet’ projects. Children are keen to take everyone to the exhibition in the hall: entry is through the front garden. (Please ask the Afterschool Care team for alternative directions if your child is in wraparound care).

Updates & Reminders

Safety

The playground gates are opened at 3.10pm to allow parents and carers to collect children more easily than from the car park. If you have a small child with you, they must not climb on school equipment. The trim trail looks superficially like climbing equipment found in some public play areas but it has been designed to be safely used under teacher supervision only and by older pupils.

The Parish Hall car park and surrounding area present significant challenges. Please do not park on the corner, obscuring the view round the bend, as this is dangerous: this is not a safe space to leave a vehicle. Please supervise young children closely in this area.

Online Safety Guides for Parents/Carers.

Just a reminder we have children in school with serious allergies please do not send your child in with items containing nuts, this includes chocolate spread, peanut butter and products containing a chocolate filling like Nutella or chocolate bars containing nuts. We have had a few occasions recently where we have found items have been sent into school in packed lunches which contain nuts.

Dates for the Diary

  • Thursday 5th March - World Book Day
  • Friday 6th March - Mental Health Workshop Supporting your child - this has been postponed by CAMHS we will update you as soon as there is a new date.

Easter Egg Hunt Sunday 22nd March 2-4pm

Tickets are on sale now (£5 each)! You can buy your tickets in the village shop or using the link below.

Easter Egg Hunt tickets

We are looking for volunteers to help out at the event. If you can help, then please get in touch with the PTA.  There are plenty of jobs to do including setting up, manning a stall, serving drinks and handing out the eggs.

Also if anyone fancies being a bunny for the afternoon...

We still desperately need helpers to collect the eggs around the village on Friday 13th March from 6pm. If you're free and can help for a bit then do get in touch. More helpers means less houses to cover for each person so please help if you can.

Your PTA trustees are:

Lucy Crawford (Yr 3)

Emma Austin (Yr 2 and 4)

Catherine Ravensward (Reception and Yr4)

Jill Bali (Yr 2 and 4)

Charlotte Noakes (Yr1 and 4)

Remember: Please be aware that we have children in school with serious food allergies. To ensure the safety of all of our children please avoid sending your child to school with anything that contains nuts this includes sandwiches containing peanut butter or chocolate spread.
