Welcome to Year 4 and Year 5

Class Teacher- Miss Nightingale

Beech Class Term 5

In Geography Year 4 will be learning about South America whilst Year 5 will be learning about North America.

In History Year 4 will be learning about the Anglo-Saxons and Scots. Pupils will be developing their knowledge of what happened in Britain after the withdrawal of the Roman Army in 410CE. Year 5 will be learning about the Kingdom of Benin c.900-1300CE.

In Maths, Beech class will be building on their knowledge of decimals, including using decimals in the context of money.  Year 5 will also be learning about percentages.

The Secret of Platform 13 by Eva Ibbotson will provide the inspiration for much of the learning in English this term.  This will be followed by a poetry unit, which will include The Lady of Shallot, The Eagle and The Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

In Design and Technology our textiles unit will focus on combining fabric shapes.

In Art we will be starting a lino printing unit: learning about the work of William Morris and creating our own botanically inspired designs, before printing using lino.  

In Science, Year 4 will be learning about plants including their transportation of water. We will then move onto begin a unit of work on Living things and their habitats. 

In Year 5 the children will begin a unit of work on Earth and Space.

In PE and Sport Beech Class will be developing the skills needed to play football on Tuesdays, and practising the skills needed to play badminton on Thursdays.

In Computing, Beech Class will be programming and exploring the different functions available when using Micro:bits.

In Music our unit is: Expression and improvisation.

In Religious Education the ‘Big Question’ for Year 4 is: What role does worship play in the life of a Hindu? Whilst the Big Question Year 5 will be discussing is: How can following God bring freedom and justice?

In French, we will be talking about birthdays; making use of our knowledge of French vocabulary for months of the year and numbers.
